I have been thinking of running mango on a dedicated small fanless box so that it can sit out of the way under the stairs and then use web access to control/access it.

What examples of h.w do people have for running this on?

My basic thoughts would be a small ATOM based box running Ubuntu server and tomcat. Have it as a fanless device - so its quiet - and use flash type storage device so again there is no moving parts

any ideas or suggestions welcome

(I am also on a budget and hope I can find somthing sub $200 or so)

I see link to the rack-mount, but if you're going through the expense of a Schweitzer machine, you are likely to be using packaged industrial HMI software.

Does anybody have an idea on how a small, Intel Atom or Via-based machine performs running WAMP and Mango? LAMP?

Any thoughts or example hardware setups would be appreciated. Thanks!

Here is what I have been looking at - in no particular order - would love peoples thoughts and feedback

My criteria are
1 - no moving parts (this thing is going to run 24x7 for years - and dust kills fans etc)
2 - battery backed up - so in event of power failure/brownout - it does not die - ideally about 4 to 6 hrs back up
3 - lots of com ports - hope to use 1-wire a lot - and want flexability of a number of 1-wire networks to ensure reliability
4 - linux probably - althought i am a windows person - linux seems to be better suited to a box which will run for ever
5 - 250 to 500 mb memory and 4 to 10gb storage as a min
6 - wifi - (but not eccential)
7 - potentially a touch screen

Also take a look at www.mini-itx.com - very helpful chap - had a good long conversation with him - he has a 1-wire network in his house (not Mango)

We think a suitable system will be about £300

Why don't you use a plug pc like this one.

Cool device - but what realistically is the smalles sensiable device for running Mango on

I would have thought that this little block did not have enough memory

I was running mango with hundreds of points polling every 5-10s logging every 15 minutes with derby on IBM R50 laptops 1.5GHZ cpu single core and 512 mb ram and it worked, but I replaced the laptops with propers servers and I'm a lot happier now.

Hi,

Here is an old thread on the same topic.
http://mango.serotoninsoftware.com/forum/posts/list/231.page

Please see it for explanation about ARM CPU based systems like the sheevaplug. If there has not been anything new recently on JVM side, I would say those cannot be used with mango.

In atom based systems I don't see any problem, using such currently.

Hi,

I would like to run mango on a beagleboard, but i'm also unsure about the preformance of java.

Are there any (non graphical) benchmarks i could run?
I found some vm's (zero, shark, cacao) that i could try, that seem to be faster... any idea if they are any good?
It seems like android is ported to the beagleboard. Android uses java right? Or is this just simplistic thinking of me?

I asked ARM about their Java support, but didn't find their response encouraging. They didn't say anything about any future plans.

Note that Android is based upon Java, but is not anything close to a full JDK. I haven't tried it out myself, but i would not expect Mango to run on Android unmodified.

... but, you may have better luck with Mango Automation

Is it possible to run 'mango automation' from an embedded OS without modifications?

I was looking at some nice ARM-based platforms like this http://www.friendlyarm.net/products/mini6410

It may not support mango but do you think would it be possible to use mango automation there?

Best Regards

I think, that will be problem with JAVA version. Some sources are talking about J2ME edition for FriendlyArm or old 1.4 JDK .
I think about AlixBoards with AMD Geode
